What was your reaction when you saw the pens?

My first thought was: There are so many bold colours! I am not used to working with such strong colours and felt unsure about how to combine them. Several of the pens were also quite thick, I usually prefer the precision of finer tips. At the same time, I was genuinely excited and looked forward to starting to draw with them. The challenge simply made it more enjoyable.

I was already familiar with some of the pens, but most of them were new to me. As soon as I received them, I began creating colour charts with the different shades. I tried various combinations and layered several of them over one another. Once I had become more familiar with the pens, I started deciding what I wanted to draw.

In the article Create your own colour chart, Marita shares her best tips for getting to know pens and new colours using different types of colour charts.

Can you tell us a little about your motif? What was your inspiration and the idea behind it?

The motif was largely inspired by the pens themselves. The dark blue tones combined with vibrant yellow and orange shades reminded me of an evening in lively city streets. I wanted to illustrate life on a dark evening. At the same time, I wanted the colours and textures of the pens to stand out. That is why I chose a relatively flat composition, where perspective would not distract from the colours and textures of the piece.

The inspiration came as I began testing the pens and getting to know them. Gradually, I explored different textures and colour combinations. Everything was tested beforehand before I applied the techniques in the final artwork. Many of the pens were layered on top of one another to create deeper colours and richer textures.

At first, I was slightly intimidated by how bold the colours were, but the more familiar I became with them, the more I fell in love with every shade I had been given.

Do you have any tips for someone who feels stuck and cannot find the creativity to start creating?

Sometimes it can be both exciting and inspiring to do exactly what the competition asked for, combining new tools and colours rather than the ones you are used to. Choose a few pens, markers or other materials that you rarely use. Then create abstract sketches and drawings, everything is allowed. Do not be too hard on yourself. This is how you get to know the materials. When inspiration starts to flow, you will begin using the tools in new ways you have never tried before. It gives you a fresh perspective on what you already own.

What was your first reaction when you found out you had won, and what will you buy with the prize?

At first, I did not believe it. It felt incredible to win such a competition and to be recognised for my skills. I do not usually enter competitions, but this one has given me a new sense of confidence.

I have already purchased a box from Toyo Steel Company, which I have filled with a small sketchbook from Gmund and pens from Copic, along with matte graphite pencils from Faber-Castell and Staedtler.
