Pastel is made of powdered chalk and dye. A type of pastel was already used in the 1400s but the technique was completed only in the 18th century.
A pastel drawing is very sensitive to touch, and the finished result has to be fixed - for this you need fixative. To prevent unwanted effects, the fixative can be sprayed over the work.
