When it comes to markers the content of it may differ. Generally, there are alcohol-based markers and water-based markers. Copic, Touch and Promarkers from Winsor & Newton are some examples of popular brands that are producing alcohol-based markers. The ink in these are semi-transparent which means that combining and blending different colours are possible. If you want the best result you should use a marker paper for your alcohol-based markers. The surface on marker paper is treated in order for the ink to stay on the surface of the paper, and not bleed through it.

If you are using a water-based marker you necessarily do not need a special marker paper, and sometimes they can also be used on different surfaces.
