The British company Derwent has a long history of providing artists' materials since 1832. They have a good understanding of the artist's needs. We have now added their Kol set to our range, one of the oldest and most traditional drawing tools. Carbon is an unpretentious material that opens up the imagination. One of the traditional ways to use charcoal is to make life studies or sketch something quickly.

The charcoal set comes with 3 compressed charcoal blocks, 2 kinds of natural charcoal from willow branches and vines, 3 charcoal pens, 1 paper stump.

The most basic form of drawing charcoal is made from charred willow branches or parts of vines. The powdery substance is transferred to the paper and enters the fibres of the paper. This allows the charcoal to be easily levelled and smudged.

Derwent Compressed Charcoal is a solid square block of pure, reformed charcoal that comes in 3 shades. It produces deep, dense tones with a completely different texture to graphite, is darker than regular charcoal and adheres better to the paper but can be more difficult to erase. Easy to blend and layer.

Get more control over your drawings but keep the traditional charcoal effects with Derwent Charcoal pencils. A more robust option and longer lasting than regular charcoal, the pencils can be blended for a range of effects and can be sharpened for detailed work. Perfect for travelling. Using a paper stump, you can create shadows, erase or correct.
